Singapore Court Issues Fine to Elderly Driver After Fatal Incident

Post by : Shakul

In a poignant case drawing attention to road safety, a Singapore court has levied the maximum fine on an 86-year-old man following a catastrophic pedal error that resulted in the deaths of two lifelong friends. This incident raises important questions about the safety of elderly drivers on the road.

The tragic event took place on October 11, 2023, outside a multi-storey car park in Toa Payoh. The driver, Phua Chiew Tong, was on a typical outing with two friends, aged 76 and 83, with whom he had a bond spanning over fifty years.

Court evidence revealed that as the passengers were preparing to exit, the vehicle began to slide backwards. In a split-second reaction to stop it, the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, leading to the car reversing into both men, ultimately running them over before hitting a kerb and a pillar.

Emergency services rushed the victims to the hospital; however, their injuries were too severe, and they passed away shortly thereafter. Medical examinations indicated that blunt force trauma was the cause of death.

The court imposed a S$10,000 fine and prohibited the driver from obtaining a driving license for eight years. Prosecutors labelled this case as one with "exceptional circumstances" due to the tragic outcome stemming from a momentary lapse.

The defense emphasized the driver's age, health concerns, and the profound psychological toll of the incident, pointing out that he now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. While the court acknowledged these factors, it emphasized the importance of accountability in light of the loss of life.

This incident has ignited a wider conversation in Singapore regarding the assessment of elderly drivers, the necessity for heightened road safety awareness, and the importance of implementing preventive measures to avert such accidents in the future.
