Major Milestone: Qatar Gene Bank Safeguards Over 11 Million Seeds

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, Qatar's Ministry of Municipality showcased the Qatar Gene Bank's significant achievements in genetic resource conservation and biodiversity protection.

The event, themed "Acting Locally for Global Impact," underscored the critical role biodiversity plays in ecosystem sustainability, food security, and sustainable development initiatives.

Since its inception in 2012, the Qatar Gene Bank has preserved an impressive 11.37 million seeds, which accounts for about 75 percent of the wild plant species native to Qatar. This monumental effort not only secures Qatar's natural heritage but also ensures the ongoing collection of valuable plant genetic resources.

The ministry pointed out that the Gene Bank has recorded 1,404 genetic accessions and completed over 1,200 field missions throughout Qatar and its nature reserves to gather, monitor, and maintain plant diversity.

Furthermore, the Gene Bank has made substantial headway by registering 894 Qatari genetic resource accessions within globally recognized databases, fostering international scientific collaboration in biodiversity conservation efforts. It has also amassed 3,500 standard herbarium specimens, contributing a vital reference collection for research and studies pertaining to the environment.

To cultivate local expertise, the Gene Bank has offered training to 100 participants through 20 international and regional courses, totaling 600 hours focused on biodiversity conservation and genetic resource management.

Moreover, Qatar’s genetic resources have received official registration within the global system maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This recognition amplifies Qatar's role in global initiatives aimed at biodiversity protection, genetic resource preservation, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

The impressive advancements made by the Qatar Gene Bank reflect the nation’s steadfast commitment toward environmental sustainability, biodiversity enhancement, and future food security.
