Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu has highlighted the motivational effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public encouragement on India’s sportspersons. She said the Prime Minister places greater value on commitment, hard work and resilience than on the colour of medals.
Prioritising dedication over podium finishes
Sindhu explained that when athletes are disappointed by the absence of a gold, the Prime Minister often reframes the achievement by noting that securing any medal is significant. He routinely acknowledges the labour and discipline behind each performance, whether competitors miss the podium by narrow margins or lose crucial moments.
Reflecting on her own experience after winning bronze, Sindhu said it was natural to feel regret at not clinching gold, but the Prime Minister’s perspective helped to recalibrate that disappointment.
She added that Modi’s recognition extends even to those who are edged out by seconds or small margins, underscoring the value he places on effort and competitive spirit rather than solely on results.
Effect on Olympic teams and morale
Sindhu recalled the interaction between the Indian contingent and PM Modi following the Tokyo Olympics, when the women’s hockey team finished fourth and felt deflated. According to her, the Prime Minister’s remarks played a role in restoring their morale.
She said Modi reassured the athletes that their performances were commendable and that the nation was proud of their commitment, a response that transformed disappointment into a sense of collective achievement.
Sindhu noted that the Prime Minister avoids framing outcomes as losses and instead highlights the pride the country takes in athletes’ exertions.
She also reflected on a personal observation earlier this year: the trajectory of her sporting success coincided with Modi’s time in office, a parallel she found meaningful in mapping the milestones of her career alongside his leadership.
For Sindhu and many of her peers, Modi’s consistent acknowledgement amounts to more than formal recognition; it affirms the values of discipline, perseverance and national representation that define elite sport.
