President Vladimir Putin of Russia is expected to touch down in New Delhi this evening for a pivotal two-day State visit, coinciding with the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This marks his first visit to India since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, with his last trip to the nation occurring in December 2021. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin's visit aims to fortify the enduring "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" between the two countries.
Throughout his stay, Putin will partake in extensive talks with Indian officials regarding trade, economic collaboration, scientific advancements, cultural exchanges, and pressing regional and global issues. Reports suggest that the visit will culminate in the signing of over ten intergovernmental agreements alongside fifteen additional commercial and non-commercial memorandums, underscoring the robust India-Russia relationship across diverse sectors.
Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi will host an exclusive dinner for Putin in New Delhi. The following day, December 5, the Russian leader will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan, which will include a tri-services guard of honor, following a tribute at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Raj Ghat. The formal discussions will be held at Hyderabad House, where both leaders will assess the progression of bilateral ties and delineate future areas of collaboration.
Ahead of the visit, Russia has conveyed its interest in exploring discussions on the potential sale of more S-400 long-range air defense missile systems, as well as the prospect of India acquiring Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. Kremlin officials have emphasized the ongoing cooperation in defense technologies, including the production of BrahMos missiles and the exchange of advanced expertise, highlighting the importance for the strategic partnership's future. Nuclear energy agreements are also anticipated to be on the agenda for discussion.
This visit aligns with the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia Strategic Partnership, established in October 2000 and elevated to a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" during Putin's previous visit in December 2010. Both nations are committed to enhancing trade and economic relations, with a target of $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. In 2024-25, trade between the two countries reached a record $68.7 billion, reflecting the deepening economic collaboration.
Accompanying Putin is a delegation of high-ranking Russian officials, including Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, representatives from Roscosmos, Rosatom, VEB.RF, and top executives from major financial institutions and industries such as Rosneft, Sberbank, Basic Element, Rusal, and VTB Bank. Their participation underscores the strategic and economic importance Russia attributes to enhancing its ties with India.
This significant visit reinforces both India and Russia's dedication to expanding political, economic, and defense cooperation, marking an important stride in their longstanding bilateral relations while jointly addressing global and regional challenges.
