Putin: Ukraine Conflict Will Persist Unless Kyiv Concedes Territory

Post by : Raina Nasser

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has asserted that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will only find resolution if Kyiv relinquishes control of the territories currently held by Russian forces. During his remarks in Kyrgyzstan, he emphasized that continued Ukrainian resistance would compel Russia to sustain military efforts to gain these regions.

The Russian military is actively pushing through eastern Ukraine, with fierce and costly confrontations against Ukrainian forces, which are increasingly overwhelmed. Key areas such as Donetsk are witnessing heavy clashes, with Russia alleging that towns like Pokrovsk and Myrnograd are encircled. Ukraine, however, disputes these claims, affirming that its troops maintain defensive positions along the front lines.

Since its inception in February 2022, the conflict has devolved into the most lethal war in Europe since World War II, with Russia occupying nearly 20% of Ukrainian land. The control of these areas remains a major hurdle in the pursuit of peace talks.

In parallel, the United States has proposed a new initiative aimed at resolving the near four-year-long war. Putin characterized this plan, set to be reviewed in forthcoming discussions with both Moscow and Kyiv, as a potential framework for negotiations. The Russian leader noted that the updated US draft could serve as a basis for future agreements, although Russia continues to demand global acknowledgment of its occupied territories.

Ukrainian representatives have vehemently dismissed any notion of territorial concessions. Andriy Yermak, an aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed that there will be no signing away of land as long as Zelensky holds office. He emphasized that discussions must focus solely on the delineation of the current front line, which spans over 1,100 kilometers.

Diplomatic endeavors are still in motion, with US negotiator Steve Witkoff scheduled to visit Moscow next week regarding the revised peace proposal. Additionally, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will be in Kyiv later this week to address security matters.

Putin has also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, arguing that any deal with his administration would be legally challenging, a stance that has attracted criticism from both Ukraine and its global partners. Analysts reveal that Russian troop advances in 2025 have ramped up, capturing an average of 467 square kilometers monthly, marking a notable increase from the preceding year.

This war has resulted in sweeping devastation, claiming countless lives and displacing millions. Despite global calls for a ceasefire, Moscow insists that territorial negotiations must be initiated by Ukraine before substantial discussions can transpire.
