Putin Denounces Ukrainian Government as Illegitimate and Calls Peace Discussions Futile

Post by : Raina Nasser

During a recent visit to Kyrgyzstan, President Vladimir Putin articulated that he considers Ukraine's government to be illegitimate, asserting that entering into peace negotiations with Kyiv would be pointless. His remarks followed a three-day engagement, where he described the proposal from US President Donald Trump as merely “a set of issues for discussion” rather than an official draft agreement, though he recognized it might pave the way for future talks.

Putin criticized the Ukrainian administration for not conducting elections after the term of President Volodymyr Zelensky ended. He claims that the lack of electoral legitimacy undermines any possibility for agreements. Ukrainian representatives argue that elections cannot proceed amid martial law and ongoing defensive measures against Russian aggression.

He stated that the US has acknowledged Russia's stance during the discussions, but emphasized that there remain numerous critical issues that require deliberation. “Serious dialogue is needed. Each term is important,” Putin remarked.

Putin elaborated on Moscow's prerequisites for halting hostilities, making it clear that military action would cease only if Ukrainian forces evacuated the areas currently occupied by Russia. He warned that failure to comply would lead to Russia fulfilling its objectives through force. Previously, he has insisted on a total Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions, including those not currently under Russian control, before engaging in peace discussions.

Furthermore, Putin seeks assurances that Ukraine will not join NATO or host NATO troops, aiming to pull the country gradually back under Moscow's influence.

Diplomatic efforts continue, as US special envoy Steve Witkoff is anticipated to visit Moscow next week, while US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll may head to Kyiv. The ongoing conflict, which erupted following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has evolved into the most lethal armed struggle in Europe since World War II, capturing international focus and prompting various negotiations.
