PSG Triumphs Over Flamengo in Exciting Penalty Shootout for Intercontinental Cup

Post by : Mara Rahim

In a thrilling showdown, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) emerged victorious in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup, defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout. The match, held at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar, concluded at 1-1 after both regular and extra time, leading to PSG's dramatic 2-1 win on penalties thanks to goalkeeper Matvey Safonov’s incredible performance.

Adding to their remarkable 2025 campaign, PSG secured the Intercontinental Cup alongside their victories in Ligue 1, the French Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup, and Trophy of Champions. The breakthrough for PSG came in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted a goal following a swift counter-attack. Flamengo leveled the score in the 62nd minute, courtesy of a penalty from Jorginho after Marquinhos brought down De Arrascaeta in the box.

The first half was action-packed, with a disallowed goal from Fabian Ruiz for PSG after VAR review. Flamengo kept pressing for an advantage, forcing multiple impressive saves from Safonov, while PSG suffered a setback with Lee Kang-in sustaining a thigh injury. Throughout the extra time, both teams created chances but ultimately faced off in the penalty shootout.

During the shootout, Safonov displayed heroics by saving four penalties from Flamengo’s Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo. PSG managed goals from Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, and despite misses from Dembele and Barcola, the French club lifted the trophy. Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery commended the team’s effort, emphasizing their strong performance against formidable adversaries and the need to maintain focus for the season ahead.
