Controversy Erupts Over Prada's ₹69,000 Safety Pin Brooch

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a rather audacious move, luxury fashion giant Prada has once again stirred conversation, this time not for its famed runway showcases or exclusive garments. The Italian label has unveiled a surprisingly simple yet expensive accessory—a safety pin brooch—tagged at an eye-watering ₹69,000 ($775).

Officially referred to as the "Crochet Safety Pin Brooch," this item is adorned with colorful crochet thread, showcasing Prada’s signature triangle logo charm. Crafted from brass and cotton, it measures about 3.15 inches and offers three unique color combinations: blue and brown, pastel pink with pistachio green, and orange with brown, all radiating a warm autumn vibe.

What has left many astonished is the stark contrast between its lavish pricing and the low-cost alternatives available, with a simple safety pin costing just ₹10 in local markets. Social media has erupted with reactions, including one user who humorously stated, “We used to make things like this in our needlework classes!!” Another commented, “I could craft this myself and even find a gold charm for the pin's hole.” The pricing gap led to sentiments like, “I could fill my entire closet with ₹70,000” while others recounted tales of purchasing similar pins for mere rupees.

This isn’t the first time Prada has faced backlash over its pricing strategies. Previously, the brand introduced Kolhapuri-style chappals at a staggering ₹1.2 lakh, generating criticism for failing to acknowledge the traditional Indian artisans whose designs inspired them. The uproar was significant enough to lead to a public interest litigation (PIL) at the Bombay High Court, seeking redressal for the alleged appropriation of local artistry.

While luxury brands frequently position regular items at exorbitant prices to convey exclusivity and prestige, the safety pin brooch incident highlights a delicate balance between high fashion and public criticism. While some view it as an audacious statement of brand identity, others perceive it as an instance of blatant extravagance.
