IZNIK, TURKEY — A momentous occasion unfolded as Pope Leo XIV met with Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I and an array of Christian leaders at Lake Iznik to celebrate the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. This significant gathering, held at the revered site where the 325 A.D. council established the influential Nicaean Creed, underscored the unity of faith among various Christian denominations.
Arriving via helicopter from Istanbul, the pope was welcomed by the echoing call to prayer from a nearby mosque, showcasing the event's distinctive interfaith environment. Leaders from a diverse range of Christian communities, including Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Coptic, Armenian, Syrian, and Anglican churches, partook in prayers at the newly excavated stone foundations of the Basilica of Saint Neophytos, thought to be the original location of the council.
United in Prayer
The ceremony alternated between Catholic and Orthodox hymns, providing a reflective atmosphere centered on shared beliefs. The pope articulated the Nicaean Creed as “the fundamental essence of the Christian faith,” highlighting its vital role in bridging gaps among Christians through centuries of division post the Great Schism of 1054.

While the event's historical and spiritual weight was acknowledged by many locals, reactions varied. Suleyman Bulut, a 35-year-old resident, lauded the gathering, emphasizing the need for Muslims to honor global religious heritage. Conversely, shopkeeper Hasan Maral voiced apprehensions, mirroring the intricate dynamics of religious sentiment in predominantly Sunni Muslim Turkey.
Support for Local Catholics
Prior to his visit to Iznik, Pope Leo engaged with Istanbul’s small Catholic community, motivating them to find strength in their minority experience. His stops included the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and a nursing home operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, where he shared blessings and warm interactions with residents.
Continuing his visit, Leo planned ecumenical discussions and interfaith encounters, featuring a stop at the Blue Mosque and a Mass at Istanbul’s Volkswagen Arena. This journey reflects the Vatican's persistent commitment to promoting dialogue, respect, and unity among Christians while reaching out to other faith groups.
