Pope Leo on Monday sent a clear message about the direction he wants the Catholic Church to take, urging Vatican cardinals to help build a Church that is joyful, welcoming, and close to ordinary people. Speaking during his first Christmas address to senior Church officials, the new pope praised his late predecessor, Pope Francis, and said he intends to continue many of the reforms Francis began.
Addressing cardinals at the Vatican, Pope Leo described Francis as a “prophetic voice” who worked hard to make the global Church more open and caring, especially toward the poor and those on the margins of society. He said Francis believed deeply in a Church that welcomes everyone and serves people with humility and kindness, values that Leo said remain important today.
Pope Leo, who is the first pope from the United States, used a calm and respectful tone in his speech. Unlike Francis, who often used his Christmas addresses to sharply criticize problems inside the Vatican, Leo chose a softer approach. His speech lasted about 15 minutes and avoided direct rebukes, but it still touched on serious concerns about how the Church is run.
He warned Church leaders not to become too rigid or trapped in ideology when applying Church teachings. According to Leo, rules and structures should serve people, not slow down the Church’s mission. He said the Vatican’s complex system must support the work of spreading faith and helping society, rather than becoming a burden.
The pope also spoke honestly about tensions inside the Vatican. He said personal conflicts, struggles for power, and self-interest sometimes damage trust and cooperation among officials. These problems, he said, are slow to change and can weaken the Church’s witness to the world. He openly questioned whether true friendship and teamwork are being practiced within the Roman Curia, the Vatican’s central administration.
Despite these challenges, Pope Leo struck a hopeful note. He called for a more “missionary” Vatican, one that thinks beyond routine paperwork and focuses instead on today’s real social, pastoral, and spiritual challenges. He encouraged cardinals and officials to see their roles as a service to people everywhere, not just as administrative duties.
By repeating many of Pope Francis’ key themes in a gentler style, Pope Leo signaled continuity rather than change in direction. His message suggested that while his leadership tone may be more diplomatic, his vision remains clear: a Church that listens, welcomes, and walks alongside people in a rapidly changing world.
