PM Modi Calls for Unity Amid Winter Session Challenges

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a constructive tone for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, highlighting the impressive voter turnout in the recent Bihar elections as a testament to India’s democratic vitality. He applauded the significant involvement of women voters, stating that India has inherently embraced democracy and reaffirmed trust in it.

In a direct address to the Opposition, still grappling with its considerable loss in Bihar, Modi advised them to refrain from unnecessary dramatics during parliamentary proceedings, insisting they focus on productivity. He remarked that he expected leaders to have moved beyond the election's outcome, though their recent comments indicated otherwise.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance dominated the Bihar elections, securing 202 out of 243 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA coalition could only win 35. Modi cautioned against letting this victory engender arrogance, urging that serious legislative work remain the focus in Parliament.

The Winter Session, which extends until December 19, is anticipated to feature conflicts, particularly regarding the Opposition's demands for a debate on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition members voiced their insistence on discussing SIR during key meetings held on Sunday, suggesting that without this discussion, the session would not proceed smoothly.

Following the all-party meeting, however, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju indicated no party issued threats to disrupt proceedings, stressing the government’s commitment to ensuring the House operates efficiently while maintaining that disagreements should not hinder productivity.

Additionally, the government plans to introduce 10 new bills and engage in discussions commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. Despite the firm stances of both sides, the opening day hinted at intense discussions ahead, even as appeals for cooperation and restraint continued.
