Mohammed Ibrahim, a 16-year-old Palestinian-American, has been freed from Israeli detention after enduring nine months without charges. Arrested while visiting the Israeli-occupied West Bank at the age of 15, he faced accusations of stone-throwing, claims he has firmly rejected.
Upon his release, Mohammed was taken to a hospital due to significant health issues, with family members noting his pallor and weight loss. His uncle, Zeyad Kadur, expressed profound relief, branding the last nine months as a “horrific and endless nightmare.” The focus now lies on providing Mohammed with the medical attention he needs to regain his health and childhood.
The US State Department has welcomed his release, confirming ongoing consular support for the family while reiterating the commitment to the safety of American citizens. In the lead-up to his release, his father, Zahar Ibrahim, had voiced concerns about the lack of action by the US government, which led to a letter of concern signed by 27 lawmakers advocating for more decisive measures.
Mohammed spent his detention within Ofer Prison, alongside adult prisoners, including those with severe convictions. Human rights organizations and the United Nations have raised alarm about the predicament of Palestinian children in Israeli detention, citing reports of abuse and prolonged incarceration without charges. Currently, about 350 Palestinian minors remain in custody.
Following his release, the family also seeks justice for Mohammed’s cousin Sayfollah Musallet, a young dual US citizen allegedly killed by Israeli settlers in July during a confrontation. Both Mohammed and Sayfollah had previously worked together at the family-owned ice cream shop in Tampa, Florida. The family anticipates that the US government will provide ongoing protection and advocacy regarding Sayfollah's case.
The release of Mohammed Ibrahim not only offers respite to his family but also underscores persistent issues regarding the treatment of Palestinian youths in detention and the broader human rights landscape in the West Bank.
