Negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Istanbul have reached a standstill, as confirmed by Islamabad on Friday. This setback follows each side exchanging blame for recent border clashes that could jeopardize a tenuous ceasefire established by Qatar.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reported that the talks had fallen into a “stalemate” as hostilities continued to escalate along the border. He expressed gratitude to Turkiye and Qatar for their mediation efforts but criticized the Afghan Taliban for not adhering to its 2021 Doha commitments related to counter-terrorism.
Tarar emphasized that Pakistan “will not endorse any actions by the Taliban regime that threaten regional stability,” reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty while also fostering peace for the Afghan populace.
The tensions preceded after Afghan officials reported that four civilians were killed and five injured during crossfire between Pakistani and Afghan military forces. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign ministry alleged that Afghanistan initiated the violence, asserting that its forces acted solely in self-defense.
Leading Islamabad’s delegation in Istanbul is Pakistan’s National Security Adviser Asim Malik, while Afghanistan’s team is directed by Abdul Haq Wasiq, the nation’s intelligence chief. It’s reported that mediators are currently evaluating Pakistan’s demands aimed at curtailing cross-border militant assaults.
Since early October, the region has witnessed escalating confrontations, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides. The United Nations has documented at least 50 civilian fatalities and over 400 injuries in Afghanistan, while Pakistan has reported that 23 soldiers were killed.
Islamabad holds Kabul responsible for harboring militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been linked to various attacks within Pakistan. However, the Afghan Taliban refutes these claims.
Despite establishing a joint monitoring mechanism last week, ongoing violence reveals the profound mistrust that continues to characterize the relationship between these neighboring countries.
