Marine researchers operating off Mexico have recorded a notable and uncommon instance of orcas preying on juvenile great white sharks. Published in Frontiers in Marine Science, the study represents the first confirmed documentation of this behaviour in Mexican waters.
Footage gathered between 2020 and 2022 using drones and submerged cameras shows pods of orcas working in concert to roll young great whites onto their backs. The manoeuvre induces a temporary paralysis known as tonic immobility, enabling the orcas to remove and share the sharks' nutrient-dense livers while often leaving the remainder of the carcass.
While similar liver-focused predation has been observed in regions such as South Africa, Australia and California, these Mexican records extend the known geographic reach of the behaviour. Scientists note that juvenile sharks are particularly vulnerable, and seasonal targeting by orcas could have implications for local shark population dynamics.
Marine biologists stress that the findings broaden understanding of orca hunting strategies and the complex interactions between apex predators in marine ecosystems. The cases highlight that even large predators like great white sharks can fall victim to coordinated, intelligent hunting by orca pods.
These observations add to accumulating evidence of orcas' strategic flexibility and environmental adaptability, underscoring their role as sophisticated hunters across diverse oceanic habitats.
