Oman’s government is enhancing its focus on the handicraft sector via a tailored program spearheaded by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority. This initiative aims to bolster artisans’ capabilities while ensuring the enduring viability of traditional industries.
Central to this effort is the promotion of handicrafts within the national economy while safeguarding Oman’s cultural heritage. Officials have stressed that these traditional crafts are not only integral to cultural identity but also provide an essential income source for various communities.
The initiative offers a range of financial support, including funding for establishing and maintaining workshops, as well as for acquiring machinery and raw materials—steps that enhance productivity and quality of the crafts.
Beyond financial backing, the program also includes marketing and packaging assistance. Artisans are encouraged to participate in exhibitions, broadening their market reach and promoting their unique products.
Training forms a crucial element of this plan, providing artisans the tools to refine their skills and integrate modern techniques while honoring traditional craftsmanship. This approach seeks to boost competitiveness in both local and international markets.
The initiative is accessible to individual artisans and craft enterprises alike. To qualify, applicants must be registered with the authority and possess the relevant licenses for their business, in addition to meeting specific criteria, such as not having received comparable support within the last two years.
A comprehensive guide has been made available by authorities to streamline the application process, ensuring artisans can apply effortlessly and gain full benefit from the initiative.
Covering an extensive range of traditional crafts—such as Omani daggers, silver artifacts, palm products, perfumes, textiles, pottery, and leather goods—this initiative underscores Oman’s rich cultural heritage, attracting interest both locally and globally.
Officials reveal that from 2022 to 2025, nearly 3,000 beneficiaries will gain from this program, with funding surpassing 3 million Omani riyals, signifying a pivotal move in the growth trajectory of the handicrafts sector.
