A 35-year-old man deliberately drove into pedestrians and cyclists on the French Atlantic island of Oléron on Wednesday, officials said, leaving 10 people injured, four of them in serious condition. The collision took place on the main road between the towns of Dolus d'Oléron and Saint-Pierre d'Oléron, a popular stretch with visitors.
Witnesses and police reported that, after being detained, the suspect shouted "God is the greatest" in Arabic — a phrase that is sometimes linked in public discourse to Islamist extremism. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder, while stressing that his precise motive has not yet been established.
Investigators say the driver intentionally targeted several people over a span of multiple kilometres. Emergency services transported the wounded to nearby hospitals as officers cordoned off the area and commenced a full criminal inquiry.
Local officials described the episode as deeply unsettling for the community, pledging support to victims and reiterating the need for a thorough investigation to determine whether wider risks exist and to reassure residents and visitors.
The event adds to growing concerns about deliberate vehicle attacks in public places, prompting heightened vigilance and stepped-up police measures across France.
