Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year, will not be able to attend the award ceremony in Oslo. Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported the news on Wednesday, citing officials from the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
Machado, 58, has been one of the most prominent voices against the Venezuelan government for many years. She has faced a strict travel ban placed on her by authorities nearly a decade ago. Because of this restriction, she has been unable to leave Venezuela legally. Reports also suggest that she has been hiding for more than a year due to political pressure and the risk of arrest. Her exact location is currently unknown.
The Nobel Committee had invited her to receive the prize in person at the ceremony, which is attended each year by Norway’s King Harald, Queen Sonja, and international leaders. This year’s guest list includes Argentinian President Javier Milei and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. Machado’s absence will be strongly felt at the event, as Nobel Peace Prize winners traditionally deliver an important speech and meet with global dignitaries.
Awarding Machado the Nobel Peace Prize was seen as a major statement by the international community. It highlighted her years of peaceful political work, her strong stand for democracy, and her determination to bring change to Venezuela through non-violent means. The prize also brought renewed attention to the difficult political situation in the country, where opposition leaders often face arrests, bans, and intimidation.
The fact that Machado cannot travel to Oslo shows how restricted political freedoms in Venezuela remain. Her supporters say the travel ban is unjust and meant to silence her voice. Many international human rights groups agree and have called for the ban to be lifted.
Despite her absence, the Nobel Committee is expected to honour her achievements at the ceremony. The award will serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by political activists in many parts of the world. It also sends a strong message that peaceful struggle for democracy deserves global recognition.
The situation continues to draw attention from governments and organisations around the world, who are urging Venezuela to allow opposition leaders to participate freely in political life. Machado’s non-attendance adds yet another chapter to the long-running tension between the Venezuelan government and the international community.
