Abu Dhabi Enhances Engineering Standards with New Accreditation System

Abu Dhabi Enhances Engineering Standards with New Accreditation System

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) of Abu Dhabi has announced an important advancement in its engineering sector by implementing a new professional grading system. This system introduces four distinct levels of accreditation for engineers across officially recognized fields.

With the implementation of Administrative Decision 113/2025, the previous three-tier system has been replaced by a more nuanced classification consisting of Intern Engineer, Practitioner Engineer, Professional Engineer, and Expert Engineer. This initiative is designed to establish a clearer, merit-based career progression route while keeping technical competence at the forefront of all qualifications.

The revised framework mandates that all aspiring engineers commence at the Intern Engineer level and must pass mandatory examinations to advance to Practitioner status. Candidates seeking to elevate their qualifications can aim for the Professional and Expert categories, each requiring recognized academic credentials, completion of specific examinations, and practical experience bolstered by Professional Development Units (PDUs). These PDUs can be obtained through specialized training and educational programs validated by the DMT, ensuring alignment with industry benchmarks.

The examination structure has been revamped to thoroughly assess both technical and regulatory expertise. The tests will evaluate engineering skills, sector-specific methodologies, administrative abilities, and comprehension of the construction and building regulations pertinent to projects in Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, to assist engineers still finalizing certain prerequisites, such as degree equivalency or outstanding exams, the DMT has introduced a temporary conditional registration. This provisional status allows individuals to continue their professional activities legally while working towards full registration.

With these reforms now implemented, Abu Dhabi aims to cultivate a robust and future-oriented engineering workforce grounded in consistent standards and ongoing professional advancement.
