Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has officially sought a presidential pardon as he faces serious charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. In a statement from his Likud party, he noted his expectation for public backing, presenting the plea as crucial for the nation.
“Today, my legal team submitted a pardon request to the president. I feel this action is vital for the country’s well-being,” Netanyahu remarked in a short video. He pointed to the burdens of ongoing legal processes requiring him to testify frequently, labeling them “an impossible load not faced by any other citizen.”
In correspondence with President Isaac Herzog’s office, Netanyahu’s lawyers claimed that the protracted trials exacerbate societal rifts and obstruct his governance. They maintained that putting an end to these legal matters would foster national unity and stability.
The president’s office has acknowledged the request, which will now be sent to the justice ministry's pardons department for assessment before a formal recommendation is made to Herzog. While it is customary for pardons in Israel to follow a conviction, Netanyahu’s counsel argues that public interest and the need for unity warrant intervention at this juncture.
Netanyahu’s request has sparked significant reactions among political factions. Opposition chief Yair Lapid denounced the move, declaring that a pardon should demand an admission of guilt and public contrition, alongside a resignation from political life. Former military leader Yair Golan urged Netanyahu to step down and called on the president to reject the pardon.
Supporters within the coalition, such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have rallied behind the pardon, citing the impact of the trials on governance.
First elected in 1996, Netanyahu has been a divisive figure throughout his political journey, having served multiple terms and returning to leadership post-2022 elections. His administration has prioritized security and economic matters, though corruption claims dating back to 2019 have loomed over his tenure. These allegations include giving favors to influential business figures in exchange for gifts and favorable press coverage, charges he firmly denies.
In his current term, Netanyahu has directed significant military efforts, including responses to the 2023 Hamas assaults, the ongoing Gaza conflict, confrontations with Hezbollah, and targeted actions against Iranian military assets. His strategies in these situations have garnered mixed support domestically and criticism internationally.
With elections coming up by October 2026, polling suggests Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition may struggle to hang onto its majority. The outcome of this pardon request may significantly influence the political climate leading up to the elections.
