Nelly Korda, a leading figure on the LPGA Tour, announced a five-week hiatus from competition for health reasons. The 27-year-old American golfer revealed that this break was essential for her recovery and strength rebuilding as she prepares to compete at The Annika by Gainbridge tournament this week. With a refreshed mindset, she feels ready to face the challenges after an intense period of constant travel.
During her time off, Korda concentrated on enhancing her physical fitness, particularly addressing persistent neck issues. Opting out of golf for nearly three weeks allowed her body critical time to recuperate. Having participated in 17 tournaments this year, her rigorous schedule had left her feeling fatigued and sore. Korda prioritized her long-term health, recognizing that a temporary pause now could prevent protracted injuries later.
Reflecting on her past health struggles, including a blood clot in her arm last year and neck injuries, Korda emphasized the importance of listening to her body. She acknowledged that she previously overlooked discomfort, labeling it as minor, but has now learned the value of early rest. “I’ve gained insight into myself and my health. If I had taken my body's signals seriously earlier, it could have helped me prevent some issues. Caring for myself is crucial,” she stated.
Interestingly, her last victory was at The Annika by Gainbridge last year. Korda holds an impressive record at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, having won three out of the last four tournaments there. With the course situated close to her residence in Bradenton, she finds motivation in the support of family and friends, which boosts her confidence.
Although Korda hasn't secured a title this season, she has consistently placed within the top 10, including a notable fourth-place finish at the recent Lotte Championship. She is keen to cap off her season with a win, narrowing the gap with world-ranked No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul.
Focusing solely on controllables, Korda stated, “I can’t dictate the performance of others; I can only influence my preparation, gameplay, and daily effort. My aim is to deliver 100% every time.”
Moreover, Korda acknowledged the unpredictable nature of golf, admitting that even elite players can't guarantee victories every tournament. “Some years are lucky, others are not, but that doesn’t reflect on your skills,” she noted. “It's essential to remain dedicated and focused on the process.”
As she steps back into competitive play, Korda's primary objective is to conclude the season in good health. She believes that disciplined training, practice, and recovery strategies will enhance her performance and help prevent future injuries. Taking time off was more than just a break; it was a strategic move for her career development.
Korda's return this week has generated buzz among fans and fellow competitors alike, with many anticipating her to be a strong contender at The Annika by Gainbridge. Armed with experience and revitalized energy, she is eager to break her winless streak and embark on a new chapter in her successful career.
As Korda aptly put it, “Don’t expect to win every time, but always strive to give your best. That’s my plan for this week.”
