England's Ashes preparations are under threat following a hamstring stiffness issue that forced pace bowler Mark Wood off the field during a practice match in Western Australia. The 35-year-old had bowled eight overs for an England XI against an England Lions side when he experienced discomfort.
The incident occurred on Thursday during the only official warm-up ahead of the first Ashes Test against Australia, scheduled to commence on November 21 at Perth Stadium. England's coaching staff has announced that Wood will undergo scans to evaluate the severity of the injury, which will influence decisions regarding his participation in the upcoming matches.
Harry Brook, England's vice-captain, addressed media after the match, suggesting clarity would come once the medical team assessed Wood. “That’s part of being an extremely fast bowler. I haven’t spoken to him yet, so I don’t know the current situation. We’ll see what happens tomorrow,” Brook remarked.
Wood's potential absence is a significant concern for England, considering his valuable experience and speed are vital for a successful Ashes campaign, particularly in Australia where pace and bounce are essential.
Adding to the team's worries, Brydon Carse, another pace bowler at 30, missed the warm-up due to illness, diminishing England's fast-bowling resources for the opening match.
Despite these setbacks, there were positive takeaways for England. Captain Ben Stokes, returning from a shoulder injury sustained in July against India, showcased his prowess with a performance that included six wickets for 52 runs over 16 overs, crucially aiding the dismissal of the Lions for 382 runs. His form is a significant boost for the team after a prolonged period of recovery and limited play.
Brook commended Stokes' return, stating, “It’s great to have him back in the squad and leading us. We haven’t spent much time together recently, so taking 10 wickets as a group was a success.”
Other bowlers also performed, with Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Jofra Archer each taking a wicket, adapting to the Australian conditions. Conversely, spinner Joe Root struggled, giving away 117 runs off 15 overs while claiming just one wicket. Expected to support with the bowling, Root will look to enhance his batting performance in future innings.
Will Jacks stood out for the England XI, scoring 84 runs, his innings vital for keeping the team in contention during a challenging day. As the match progresses, England aims to maximize their time on the field before the high-stakes Ashes series kicks off.
Brook acknowledged the difficulties ahead, stating, “It’s not going to be easy. The Lions bowlers will be eager to make an impression.”
The warm-up match is taking place at Lilac Hill, a scenic venue near the Swan Valley wine region, roughly 30 minutes from Perth, steeped in cricket history yet recently sidelined due to packed schedules. This year, it regained prominence as the main WACA Ground was occupied for a Sheffield Shield fixture between Western Australia and Queensland.
During that game, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green showcased strong form with a score of 94, a promising sign ahead of the Ashes series.
For England, the priority is ensuring players such as Mark Wood and Brydon Carse make a full recovery before the series begins. The team is hopeful that Wood’s hamstring issue is minor, allowing him to contribute the pace and aggression necessary to tackle Australia’s formidable batting lineup.
In the coming days, it will be revealed whether Wood’s stiffness is merely a precaution or a more serious concern. With the Ashes series just around the corner, positive updates from medical assessments are critical for keeping England's plans intact.
