Napoli triumphed in the Italian Super Cup on Monday, earning a solid 2-0 victory against Bologna in the final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The reigning Serie A champions were propelled by Brazilian winger David Neres, who netted both goals for Napoli’s third Supercoppa Italiana title.
The match commenced with Napoli demonstrating their intent, quickly dominating possession and applying relentless pressure. Their efforts bore fruit just before halftime when Neres executed a magnificent curling shot from outside the penalty area that nestled into the top corner, giving Napoli a deserved lead. This goal broke the deadlock against Bologna, last season’s Coppa Italia champions, who struggled to establish a rhythm against Napoli’s fierce tactics.
In the second half, Bologna sought to regain momentum but fell victim to a crucial mistake from goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia. Attempting to play the ball out from the back, he misplayed a pass which Neres intercepted effortlessly, doubling Napoli’s advantage with a calm finish. This effectively sealed the encounter, leaving little time for Bologna to respond.
David Neres’ contribution to the tournament was significant, marking his third goal in the Super Cup. He had previously scored in Napoli’s 2-0 semi-final win over AC Milan, underscoring his vital role in the team’s success.
Post-match, Napoli coach Antonio Conte lauded his team’s performance, stating, “The lads deserve accolades. They showcased their determination for the fans, and now we can relish a joyful Christmas with this trophy secured.”
Traditionally, the Italian Super Cup featured a contest between the Serie A champions and the Coppa Italia victors. However, as of 2023, the format has evolved into a four-team tournament, incorporating the runners-up from both competitions. This format will continue to take place in Saudi Arabia until 2029 due to a long-term agreement.
With this victory, Napoli adds another illustrious trophy to their cabinet, bolstering their spirits as they chase the Serie A crown, currently trailing Inter Milan by two points.
Napoli will be back in Serie A action on Sunday, traveling to face Cremonese, while Bologna will aim to rebound by hosting Sassuolo.
