Myanmar Schedules Third Phase of Elections Amid Ongoing Conflict

Post by : Saif Nasser

Myanmar is set to hold the third phase of its general election on January 25, 2026, according to state media reports. The first two phases are scheduled for December 28, 2025, and January 11, 2026, covering 202 out of 330 townships across the country. The third phase will include 63 townships, as announced by the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

The election is taking place amid ongoing civil conflict that has continued since the military coup in 2021. Armed resistance groups have grown stronger, making it difficult to conduct a nationwide vote. Analysts say holding elections in such conditions is highly challenging and may not fully reflect the views of all citizens.

Junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing has stated that the elections are intended to establish a stable government, but he also acknowledged that voting will not cover the entire country due to security concerns. No official dates have been set yet for the vote counting or the announcement of results.

The military insists the election enjoys popular support, but experts warn that the ongoing conflict and security risks may affect voter participation and the credibility of the process.

This third phase is considered a crucial step for Myanmar’s military government as it attempts to transition from military rule to political legitimacy. The situation remains unpredictable, and both citizens and international observers will closely watch how the elections unfold.

The outcome of this phase may provide important clues about Myanmar’s political future and the possibility of achieving stability amid conflict.
