Former Indian opener Murali Vijay has expressed his admiration for the iconic captain MS Dhoni, describing him as an exceptional leader whose instinctive decisions had a transformative effect on Indian cricket. Reflecting on the moment when Dhoni entrusted Joginder Sharma with the final over during the 2007 T20 World Cup, a choice initially met with skepticism, Vijay highlighted how it evolved into a hallmark moment for Indian cricket. He emphasized that Dhoni's attributes are unparalleled, showcasing an extraordinary mental fortitude and remarkable power-hitting skills.
Having represented Chennai Super Kings for eight seasons under Dhoni's captaincy, Vijay noted the significant impact Dhoni had on several player careers. Currently, Dhoni continues to play exclusively in the IPL and has been secured by Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming 2026 season. Vijay praised Dhoni’s aptitude for thriving in high-stakes situations, labeling him as one of India’s most revered leaders, particularly noting his exceptional six-hitting prowess that few right-handed players can rival.
In a recent interview on Taruwar Kohli's YouTube channel, Vijay spoke of his respect for Dhoni's tactical approach and innate game sense. He asserted that the team should take pride in having such a distinctive and innovative captain, who consistently delivered unexpected results. Additionally, he acknowledged Dhoni’s calm demeanor on the field, recognizing his substantial influence on the trajectory of Indian cricket and the IPL, both as a cricketer and captain.
Vijay embarked on his international journey in 2008, accumulating 4,490 runs with 12 centuries over 87 matches for India across formats. He hung up his international boots in 2023, with his final IPL appearance occurring in 2020. Vijay’s international career featured unforgettable Test performances, particularly in overseas contests, but he regards his time playing under Dhoni's leadership as one of the most significant milestones in his cricketing journey.
