The upcoming Miss Universe 2025 event in Bangkok, Thailand, slated for November 21, is marred by significant controversies. In the lead-up to the grand finale, three judges have resigned, including Princess Camilla di Borbone delle Due Sicilie, who serves as president of the Miss Universe selection committee, alongside Omar Harfouch and French soccer figure Claude Makélélé. This sudden change has raised serious doubts regarding the competition's credibility and fairness.
Princess Camilla announced her departure a mere two days prior to the finals, giving no specific reasons. This followed the resignation of Omar Harfouch, who criticized the selection process publicly. He alleged that a secretive 'impromptu jury' had already decided on the top 30 contestants without the original eight judges' input. Harfouch claimed that this jury comprised individuals with personal ties to some participants, leading to allegations of bias. He expressed that he could not risk the futures of young women and stated his concerns were brushed aside by the Miss Universe organization.
After Harfouch's exit, Claude Makélélé also left, citing “unexpected personal reasons.” The abrupt departures of these three influential judges have led to intensified discussions among fans and the media about the pageant's integrity and impartiality.
Additionally, Miss Jamaica, Dr. Gabrielle Henry, faced her own challenges as she suffered a fall from the stage during the preliminary event on November 19, necessitating a hospital visit. Thankfully, reports indicate that her injuries are not life-threatening, but her participation in the finals remains in doubt, contributing to the event's escalating uncertainties.
Tensions were already high due to previous incidents, such as a streaming event where Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, reportedly clashed with pageant organizer Nawat Itsaragrisil, following a photoshoot dispute. Witnesses claimed that Bosch was labeled 'dumb', prompting a protest walkout from multiple contestants in support of her. These occurrences have amplified concerns about the treatment of competitors and the management of the contest.
Despite a range of controversies, the Miss Universe Organization has insisted that the finale will occur as scheduled on November 21, assuring all that the event will uphold its reputation for glamour and entertainment in light of recent turmoil.
Given the combination of judge resignations, injury, and rising disputes, this edition of the Miss Universe pageant is capturing considerable attention, inviting observers to see how the organization addresses these challenges and maintains its competitive integrity.
