In South Minneapolis, tensions are escalating as immigrant communities stand against aggressive federal immigration actions. Areas populated by Latino families, particularly along Lake Street, have seen numerous small, family-owned businesses display prominent “No ICE” signs, reflecting a mix of fear, defiance, and unity.

Shop owners report that the persistent presence of immigration agents has disrupted everyday activities and severely decreased customer traffic. Many locals are now reluctant to venture into shared spaces, concerned about potential raids, detentions, or inquiries. This situation has led to immediate and significant economic pressure on shopkeepers who depend heavily on community patronage.

The situation escalated sharply following the tragic slaying of 37-year-old Renee Good, who was killed in her car during an immigration enforcement operation. Officials claim the shooting was prompted by a confrontation, but the event has ignited considerable anger and demands for accountability among residents. Community members are questioning the level of force used and the lack of clarity surrounding the process of the incident.

In the wake of her death, thousands rallied in the streets, transforming South Minneapolis into a hub of large-scale protests. Demonstrators waved placards, shouted chants, and called for justice, pushing authorities to end aggressive enforcement approaches which they believe jeopardize innocent lives.

Support has surged from civil rights activists, local figures, and residents alike, all asserting that these raids foster fear rather than safety, disproportionately targeting immigrant families who are vital to the local economy.

For small business proprietors, the “No ICE” signs symbolize more than a political stance; they represent vital safety measures for their livelihoods. Some have reduced their operating hours, while a few have temporarily shut down due to dwindling customer numbers and continuing uncertainty.

As protests persist, the atmosphere remains charged. There are growing demands for policy reforms, independent investigations, and enhanced protections for immigrant communities. South Minneapolis has emerged as a focal point in the national discourse surrounding immigration enforcement, public safety, and civil rights.
