Micron Technology is gearing up for a significant expansion in Japan, planning to invest 1.5 trillion yen (around $9.6 billion) to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Hiroshima. This new plant will be dedicated to producing next-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, according to informed sources.
Construction on the site, which already houses Micron's operations, is slated to commence in May next year, with an aim for commercial production by 2028. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is reportedly willing to provide as much as 500 billion yen in support for this venture as part of its overarching strategy to rejuvenate the country's semiconductor industry.
Japan is actively pursuing ways to revitalize its chip sector by offering significant subsidies to international manufacturers. Besides Micron, the government is also extending its assistance to companies like TSMC and is funding the establishment of a new facility for advanced logic chip production utilizing IBM's technology.
The rising demand for HBM chips is driven by rapid developments in artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and large-scale data centers. By bolstering its operations in Hiroshima, Micron intends to lessen its dependency on production facilities in Taiwan and enhance its competitive edge against leading memory chip makers, such as SK Hynix.
The new facility is poised to strengthen Japan's status as a critical player in the expanding high-performance memory market while promoting global supply chain diversification.
