In a stunning display, No. 7 Michigan overwhelmed San Diego State with a 94-54 victory in their first matchup of the Players Era men’s championship on Monday night in Las Vegas. The Wolverines exhibited relentless teamwork and solid defense, setting the tone early and demonstrating their complete dominance.
The offense showed remarkable balance, with six players hitting double digits in points. Yexel Lendeborg topped the scoring with 15 points, complemented by six rebounds and four assists. Morez Johnson Jr. and Elliot Cadeau each contributed 13 points, highlighting the team’s depth and varied scoring options. Off the bench, Nimari Burnett and Roddy Gayle added 11 points apiece, while Will Tschetter chipped in with 10 points to provide an additional boost.
Physically outmatching their opponents, the Wolverines imposed their size and strength upon the Aztecs, who struggled to find their footing. Michigan achieved an impressive 50% shooting from the field, including 11 three-pointers from 33 attempts. Their commanding presence on the boards was evident, dominating the rebounding battle 49-34. They also profited from offensive rebounds, netting 38 points in the paint, while San Diego State managed only 12. Michigan capitalized on mistakes as well, scoring 28 points off turnovers.
San Diego State faced challenges from the outset, shooting a mere 27.4% from the field, making it exceedingly hard to score. Elzie Harrington led the Aztecs with 15 points, followed by BJ Davis with 11, but their efforts were undermined by a lack of support. In a particularly poor second half, the Aztecs converted only 5 out of 28 shots and finished with 17 turnovers, which Michigan utilized to extend their lead.
The Wolverines maintained their momentum post-halftime, scoring the initial eight points and swiftly eliminating any thoughts of a potential comeback. With 90 seconds remaining, Michigan's lead grew to an astounding 42 points, underscoring their dominance.
Questions loomed about Michigan’s ability to contend with San Diego State’s sharp defense, but it was their own defense that silenced the Aztecs’ attack throughout. San Diego State struggled to break through against a well-organized Wolverines squad.
Michigan took control early, launching a 12-point run shortly into the first half. Tschetter’s two back-to-back three-pointers created an early 17-7 advantage. Once ahead, Michigan maintained a double-digit lead consistently. San Diego State attempted to rally, with Davis and Harrington combining for 15 consecutive points to close the gap, but a crucial three-pointer from Burnett in the last minute of the first half put Michigan ahead 45-33 at the break.
Overall, Michigan's outstanding shooting, disciplined defense, and depth proved insurmountable for San Diego State. Their collaborative effort and zeal reinforced their reputation as a top contender in the tournament.
