Michigan State University has swiftly filled its head football coaching position by appointing former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald. This decision follows the dismissal of Jonathan Smith, whose brief stint in East Lansing resulted in a disappointing 4–15 overall record, including a 1–14 mark within the Big Ten.
Athletic Director Alan Batt was proactive in securing Fitzgerald’s services before other Power Five institutions had the chance. “We were looking for a coach with a strong Big Ten background, proven success, and a vision for sustained success,” Batt stated. “Pat Fitzgerald possesses all these qualities, and we are thrilled about what he will contribute to Michigan State football.”
Fitzgerald boasts an impressive 17-year tenure at Northwestern, amassing 110 victories, leading the Wildcats to three 10-win seasons and claiming two Big Ten West titles, along with numerous top-25 finishes nationally. He is recognized for cultivating disciplined teams and establishing Northwestern as a formidable competitor, consistently exceeding expectations.
Despite the controversy surrounding his departure from Northwestern due to hazing allegations, Fitzgerald’s extensive Big Ten experience, coupled with his recruiting expertise and insight into conference dynamics, positions him to effectively rejuvenate Michigan State. Experts believe his emphasis on team culture and discipline could restore the Spartans' gritty identity that has waned in recent seasons.
Reactions from fans and alumni have been overwhelmingly positive. One supporter expressed on social media, “There’s a lot to look forward to with Pat Fitzgerald at the helm. His dedication at Northwestern was impressive, and his Big Ten roots make him an ideal fit for Spartan football.”
With Fitzgerald leading the way, Michigan State is gearing up for the 2026 season, optimistic about improvements in performance, recruitment, and the overall team atmosphere. With a coach experienced in navigating conference challenges and skilled at building resilient squads, the Spartans are determined to reclaim their position in the Big Ten.
