Investigation Launched into Miss Universe President Amid Drug and Arms Allegations

Post by : Raina Nasser

Mexico has initiated an inquiry into the president of the Miss Universe organization regarding accusations of drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and fuel theft, bringing fresh controversy to the prominent beauty pageant. The Attorney General’s Office revealed on Wednesday that 13 arrest warrants have been issued as part of the investigation, although the names of all individuals implicated have not been disclosed.

Reports suggest that one of the warrants targets Raul Rocha, a Mexican national who possesses a 50% stake in the Miss Universe organization via his company, Legacy Holding Group USA. The inquiry, which began in 2024, refers to Rocha as "Raul R" in accordance with Mexican legal standards. Authorities have indicated that updates on his status will be provided in a timely manner. Rocha has yet to respond to inquiries, and the Miss Universe organization has not released an official comment.

This development follows shortly after Mexican contestant Fatima Bosch's victory in this year’s Miss Universe pageant held in Thailand. Earlier, Bosch garnered attention for leading a walkout during the competition, alleging that pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil insulted her by calling her a "dumbhead," a claim the director disputed, describing it as a misunderstanding. Bosch received public backing from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who commended her for advocating for women’s rights.

Rocha secured his share in the Miss Universe organization in 2024 from JKN Global Group. This investigation has drawn significant public interest, intertwining legal concerns with the realm of international pageantry. Authorities are diligently continuing their investigation to ascertain the extent of Rocha's and others' involvement in the alleged criminal activities.

This situation introduces a critical layer to the ongoing discourse regarding the governance and management of international beauty pageants, underscoring how legal and corporate dilemmas can converge with prominent cultural institutions and public events.
