Meta has announced a delay in the release of its forthcoming mixed-reality glasses, referred to internally as Phoenix, moving the launch to 2027. Initially anticipated for late 2026, the company has chosen to extend the development timeline to enhance the final product.
An internal memo shared by Business Insider indicates that Meta executives believe this extended period will provide teams with “more breathing room” to refine the device’s hardware. The Phoenix goggles, previously known as Puffin, aim to be lightweight, weighing around 100 grams. However, they are expected to feature lower-resolution displays and reduced computing capabilities compared to high-end headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro.
The Phoenix glasses are a part of Meta’s larger mixed-reality strategy, combining virtual and augmented realities to enable digital elements to interact with the physical environment. These devices are developed under Reality Labs, the division responsible for the Quest headset series and Ray-Ban smart glasses.
This delay occurs amidst Meta's plans for considerable cost reductions. Bloomberg recently reported that the company intends to cut spending on metaverse projects by up to 30%, potentially impacting the product timelines for the Reality Labs division.
As of now, the revised target for 2027 underscores Meta’s focus on refinement and stability, prioritizing quality in its next major hardware release.
