Lionel Messi shared his powerful emotions following Argentina's victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, calling it among the most significant moments in his life. The Inter Miami star emphasizes that the exhilaration he experienced lifting the trophy in Qatar paralleled the elation he felt at the birth of his children.
At a recent event in Miami where he received the ceremonial key to the city, Messi reflected on the magnitude of the achievement that capped his stellar career.
“Respectfully speaking, this is unrelated, but I experienced a feeling akin to my children’s births when I won the World Cup professionally,” Messi remarked. “It’s indescribable – so unique and overwhelming that my words can scarcely convey it.”
Messi’s sentiments resonated with many, given that his 2022 World Cup win followed years of disappointments. Back in 2014, he faced heartbreak after Argentina's defeat to Germany, leaving him in tears post-match. However, within eight years in Qatar, he finally fulfilled his lifelong aspiration. His outstanding plays during the tournament, including two goals in the final against France, earned him the Golden Ball awarded for the best player of the tournament, cementing his legacy among football greats.
Reflecting on the incredible celebrations nationwide, Messi observed how much the victory meant to the Argentine people. “The way the country embraced this win highlighted how much we yearned for this after such a long wait. For me, winning the World Cup is the zenith of achievements. There's nothing more to aspire for after this,” he said.
For Messi, this triumph represented the ideal finale to his career, having accomplished everything possible on both club and international fronts. “Winning the World Cup is the crown jewel for any player, representing the pinnacle of success. I've enjoyed great fortune in my career, achieving everything else—a Copa América win with Argentina was critical, but the World Cup was the missing piece in my journey,” he detailed.
While fans celebrated him, one of his continuous rivals seemed to dismiss the significance of Argentina’s win, igniting debates once more about their ongoing rivalry.
On the horizon is the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Though Messi hasn't confirmed his participation, he conveyed enthusiasm, sharing: “I anticipate an extraordinary tournament.”
Currently, the 2022 World Cup stands as a crowning achievement for Messi—a defining moment that not only solidified his football legacy but also secured his place in Argentina's sports history.
