New revelations have surfaced regarding the tumultuous Lionel Messi event in Kolkata, held on December 13, as key details from the main organiser, Satadru Dutta, come to light during the investigation.
As reported by PTI, Dutta disclosed to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that the Argentine football superstar was compensated a staggering ₹89 crore for his role in the G.O.A.T. India Tour 2025. An extra ₹11 crore was allocated for tax expenses, culminating in a grand total of ₹100 crore.
Financial Overview
The funding sources were detailed to investigators as follows:
30% came from sponsorships.
Another 30% was raised through ticket sales.
The remaining costs were covered by other financial avenues.
Numerous fans splurged on expensive tickets to witness the World Cup-winning player at Salt Lake Stadium.
Event Erupts into Disorder
Despite meticulous arrangements, the event quickly descended into chaos. An overwhelming influx of people inundated the area surrounding Messi, obstructing views for fans seated in the stands. Frustration ensued, leading some to vandalize sections of the stadium.
Security Oversight and Access Issues
Dutta stated that initially, only 150 ground passes were authorized. But this number reportedly tripled after a “high-profile individual” intervened and altered the access arrangement. An SIT official quoted Dutta saying, “The entry plan was entirely disrupted upon this individual's arrival at the stadium.”
Authorities are now investigating whether this sudden influx contributed to the failure in crowd control.
Messi Expresses Discomfort
During the inquiry, Dutta revealed that Messi's security team expressed his clear discomfort with being touched or hugged. Despite multiple reminders to exercise restraint, the crowd’s behaviour did not reflect this request. “The manner in which Messi was mobbed was entirely unacceptable to him,” Dutta stated to investigators.
Minister Resigns Amid Controversy
West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, seen closely interacting with Messi during the event, has faced allegations of granting access to friends and family onto the field. Footage of him with Messi prompted further backlash.
In light of the situation, Biswas has stepped down from his position pending the ongoing investigation.
SIT Investigation Underway
The SIT, composed of senior IPS officers, is currently examining:
Failures in security measures
Unauthorized access to the ground
The roles of organisers and officials
Circumstances surrounding vandalism incidents
Investigators are also seeking to understand how such a vast number of attendees breached restricted zones, raising critical questions about event execution and adherence to safety protocols.
