In an exhilarating match, Real Madrid turned the tables on Olympiacos, thanks to an incredible four-goal performance from Kylian Mbappe, who made history with one of the fastest hat-tricks in UEFA Champions League. The Spanish side rallied after a shaky start, clinching a 4-3 victory in Greece on Wednesday, their first win at Olympiacos after five previous attempts.
The game kicked off with Olympiacos taking an early lead when Chiquinho scored in the eighth minute. However, Real Madrid swiftly countered, with Mbappe showcasing his skill by netting three goals in a remarkable span of just six minutes and 42 seconds in the first half. He opened his account with a clinical finish assisted by Vinicius Jr., equalizing at 1-1, followed by a header from Arda Guler's cross, and completed his hat-trick with a cool finish, making it 3-1 by the 24th minute.
Despite Real Madrid's control, Olympiacos fought back valiantly. Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for the hosts with a header just after the break, rekindling their hopes. Yet, Mbappe quickly reestablished a two-goal lead with his fourth of the night at the 60-minute mark, again from Vinicius Jr.’s assist.
Olympiacos still pressed on and managed to score again, with Ayoub El Kaabi netting in the 81st minute. The Greek side continued to threaten late on, with both El Kaabi and Gabriel Strefezza coming close to equalizing, but Real's defense stood strong to secure the win.
Xabi Alonso, the coach for Real Madrid, commended his team's composure under pressure and emphasized the importance of breaking their winless streak. “Winning was crucial to reset the feeling,” Alonso remarked. “These three points are important for our standing. I liked how we remained calm and turned the game around despite going down early. Our first win here in Greece is significant.”
Alonso also highlighted Mbappe’s vital role, praising both his scoring and leadership on the field. “His contribution, both in goals and teamwork, is invaluable,” he emphasized.
With this win, Real Madrid ascends to fifth in the Champions League rankings with 12 points, solidifying their chances for a knockout round berth, while Olympiacos sits at the bottom with just two points after three matches.
This stunning performance not only showcases Mbappe’s extraordinary talent but also reinforces Real Madrid’s quest for glory in Europe's elite tournament.
