Arsenal teenager Max Dowman has established a new age milestone in the UEFA Champions League. At 15 years and 308 days, the left-sided midfielder entered as a second-half substitute in the Gunners’ 3–0 triumph over Slavia Prague.
Dowman eclipsed Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko, who made his Champions League debut at 16 years and 18 days in 2020. The feat follows Dowman’s recent appearance in the Premier League, where he became the competition’s second-youngest player after teammate Ethan Nwaneri when he featured against Leeds United in August.
Having already participated in top-level fixtures this season, Dowman has seen action against Liverpool and has appeared twice in the English League Cup. In Prague he replaced Leandro Trossard in the 72nd minute, with Arsenal maintaining the 3–0 advantage until full time.
Manager Mikel Arteta stressed the importance of inherent ability at elite level, arguing that chronological age is subordinate to a player’s capacity to adapt and perform under the demands of senior competition.
Born in Chelmsford, Essex, Dowman joined Arsenal’s academy at five years old in May 2015. A left-footed attacking midfielder, he debuted for the under-18s at 13 and became the UEFA Youth League’s youngest scorer at 14. He progressed to train with the senior group later that year and earned praise during Arsenal’s preseason tour of Asia, appearing in fixtures against AC Milan and Newcastle United.
Premier League regulations require players under 18 to use separate changing facilities from senior professionals. Off the field, Dowman recently resumed his schooling in Essex after the summer break while continuing his development with Arsenal.
Before Dowman, Moukoko held the youngest-player record in the Champions League, which itself had overtaken the 26-year-old mark set by Célestine Babayaro, who was 16 years and 86 days when he played for Anderlecht in 1994.
Dowman’s rapid progression underlines Arsenal’s emphasis on youth development and points to a promising pathway for the club’s academy prospects.
