The 28th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge kicked off in Dubai with excitement as Croatia’s Petra Marcinko showcased her talent, defeating Slovakian veteran Viktoria Hruncakova with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Celebrating her 20th birthday this week, Marcinko exhibited confidence and skill, taking just 75 minutes to triumph on court No. 1.
Notably, the tournament saw the fall of some prominent players. Top seed Dalma Galfi had to retire against Tereza Martincova after trailing 1-2 in the second set due to a foot injury. Additionally, former doubles world No. 1 Kristina Mladenovic was ousted by Alevtina Ibragimova in a speedy match, ending 6-3, 6-2 in just 73 minutes.
British prodigy Mika Stojsavljevic, fresh from her junior US Open win, kept the excitement alive by overcoming Valentina Ryser 6-4, 6-3, setting up a highly-anticipated encounter with third seed Sinja Kraus. Meanwhile, Ibragimova is set to face sixth seed Linda Fruhvirtova in the next round.
Having recently claimed the Fujairah W75 title, Marcinko, also the 2022 Australian Open junior champion, noted the vital role of momentum heading into the Australian Open qualifying tournament. She acknowledged the challenge posed by Hruncakova but credited her calmness in decisive moments for her victory.
The first set was closely fought, with both players exchanging breaks before Hruncakova’s errors, including double faults, allowed Marcinko to take the lead. The second set saw the Croatian gain an early advantage with two breaks, allowing her to close the match decisively. Next, she faces Great Britain’s Harriet Dart, who cruised past Mai Hontama with an impressive 6-1, 6-1.
As for Tereza Martincova, advancing due to Galfi’s injury left her with mixed emotions about her progress, acknowledging the situation for her competitor.
With high-profile players eliminated early, the tournament continues to highlight emerging talents, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty that keeps fans eager to see who will seize the moment next.
