On Wednesday, Manchester City staged a comeback to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League, putting additional pressure on coach Xabi Alonso. Madrid, missing their star Kylian Mbappe due to injury, initially took the lead with a goal from Rodrygo. However, City quickly responded with goals from Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland, securing a crucial win at the daunting Bernabeu Stadium. Reports indicate that another loss could jeopardize Alonso’s position, amplifying concerns despite Madrid’s strong effort.
The legendary 15-time champions have now captured just two victories from their last eight encounters, struggling to maintain their position in the top eight of the league. Guardiola acknowledged Madrid's superiority before the opening goal but commended his team for their resilience. Alonso noted that Mbappe was sidelined due to knee issues, emphasizing the risks of playing him; therefore, young striker Gonzalo Garcia was given a start.
Madrid's energetic first-half display bore fruit when Rodrygo broke his lengthy goal drought, scoring in the 28th minute. He capitalized on a counterattack that began deep in their half, finishing past Gianluigi Donnarumma. This marked his first goal in 33 matches and added to his tally against City. Rodrygo celebrated by embracing Alonso, expressing solidarity with their coach during these challenging times.
City equalized in the 35th minute when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois failed to secure a Gvardiol header, allowing O’Reilly to score easily. Just before halftime, Antonio Rudiger’s foul on Haaland resulted in a penalty that Haaland confidently converted, outsmarting Courtois. Despite Courtois making several significant saves against Haaland and Cherki in the second half, Madrid could not find the net again.
The Madrid fans expressed their discontent during the match, with the team struggling to create chances. Even the introduction of young forward Endrick couldn't alter the result, though he nearly scored by hitting the crossbar late in the game. Madrid appeared to lack creative ideas, intensifying discussions about Alonso’s future post-match. Defender Raul Asencio reiterated the players' support for their coach, asserting their commitment to improving together.
Despite the defeat, the Madrid squad expressed optimism about regaining their form, but mounting pressure, fan dissatisfaction, and poor results have left Alonso's tenure in jeopardy.
