Mamdani Signals Readiness to Work With Trump on Inflation and Living Costs

Post by : Raina Nasser

New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has indicated he would engage with President Donald Trump to confront urgent economic pressures, notably rising living costs and inflation. The Democratic socialist—whose swift ascent from political newcomer to the city’s youngest mayor in over a century has drawn national notice—stressed the importance of practical cooperation to benefit residents.

At a press event, Mamdani pointed to sharply higher grocery bills, rent and other basic expenses as central concerns for his administration and possible discussions with the federal government. He expressed a readiness to open talks with the White House about how both levels of government can work together to help New Yorkers cope with inflation.

His campaign emphasised a suite of measures aimed at easing everyday costs for working families, including proposals for free city bus travel, stronger rent protections and subsidised childcare. Mamdani also contrasted these priorities with past proposals from Trump, criticising promises that, in his view, fell short—such as pauses to food assistance during shutdowns.

During the briefing, Mamdani unveiled five women who will co-chair his mayoral transition team. The group includes Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission under President Joe Biden, and Maria Torres-Springer, who left her post as deputy mayor under Eric Adams after becoming involved with Trump.

Mamdani framed his agenda around delivering tangible economic relief and policy solutions for ordinary households. By signalling openness to bipartisan engagement, he said he aims to convert campaign commitments into measurable help for New Yorkers while keeping inflation and the cost of living central to his administration’s focus.

As the city moves toward the transfer of power, attention is on Mamdani’s next moves and whether coordination with federal authorities can ease financial strain for residents facing mounting costs.
