Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – October 14, 2025 – Malaysian authorities have closed several schools after around 6,000 students were infected with influenza, the health ministry reported. The move comes as officials work to control the spread of the virus and protect children and school staff.
Rising Influenza Cases
According to Mohd Azam Ahmad, Director General of the Ministry of Education, influenza infections have been detected in multiple regions across the country. Last week, the health ministry reported 97 influenza clusters, a significant rise from 14 clusters the week before. Most of these outbreaks were reported in schools and kindergartens.
Schools have been reminded to follow strict health guidelines, including the use of face masks, regular hand washing, and reducing large group activities. Officials stressed that these measures aim to limit virus transmission among students.
Experience from COVID-19
Malaysia has extensive experience handling infectious diseases after managing the COVID-19 pandemic, said Mohd Azam Ahmad. Schools are applying similar strategies to reduce risk, such as monitoring students for symptoms, encouraging mask use, and isolating infected individuals.
Officials also urged parents to keep children home if they show flu symptoms. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Health authorities are emphasizing the importance of vaccination and hygiene to protect students.
Impact on Schools and Students
While the number of schools closed was not specified, officials confirmed that several institutions in affected areas have temporarily shut down. The closures are intended to break the chain of infection and allow thorough cleaning and sanitization of school facilities.
Teachers, parents, and students are cooperating closely with authorities to manage the situation. Some schools have also adopted online learning methods to ensure that education continues while students stay at home.
Government Response
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education are working together to track influenza cases and prevent further spread. Health officials are also advising students and families to get flu vaccinations if available.
Authorities have assured the public that prompt action is being taken to manage the outbreak and prevent it from worsening.
