In a stunning performance, Algeria, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, kicked off their 2025 tournament campaign with a 3-0 victory over a 10-man Sudan in Rabat.
From the first moments, captain Riyad Mahrez electrified the crowd at Moulay El Hassan Stadium, scoring just 82 seconds into the match. The applause from the 16,115-strong audience reflected a sea of yellow, supporting their national team.
Currently with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia after his Manchester City tenure, Mahrez added his second goal shortly after the hour mark. Ibrahim Maza’s late addition solidified the win, marking a perfect Group E start for Algeria.
Football icon Zinedine Zidane was among the spectators, notably cheering as his son Luca defended the goal for Algeria. The crowd erupted when Zidane was shown on the big screen, showcasing their joy for both his presence and the team's performance.
After failing to secure a win in the previous two AFCON tournaments, Algeria wasted no time against their perceived weaker opponents, Sudan.
A quick assist from Mohamed Amoura allowed Hicham Boudaoui to set up Mahrez, who showcased tremendous skill to find the back of the net.
Although Sudan threatened with a chance from Yaser Awad Boshara, the attempt was thwarted by Zidane's crucial save. Later, a significant setback occurred for Sudan when Salaheldin Adil received his second yellow card shortly before halftime.
Following a disallowed goal for offside from Ramy Bensebaini, Mahrez once again highlighted his talent in the 61st minute, converting a brilliant assist from Amoura.
This marked Mahrez's eighth AFCON goal in only six appearances, earning him a standing ovation as he exited the field.
In the final minutes, substitute Ibrahim Maza capitalized on Baghdad Bounedjah’s assist, netting Algeria’s 100th goal in AFCON history, extending the lead to 3-0.
For Sudan, a team that last won the Cup of Nations in 1970, the game marked a disheartening continuation of their AFCON woes, having won only once in their last 17 appearances.
Earlier, Burkina Faso managed a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Equatorial Guinea, further intensifying Group E's competitive spirit.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Equatorial Guinea surprised everyone by taking the lead late in the game, but Burkina Faso’s determination led them to an equalizing goal in stoppage time followed by a winner from Edmond Tapsoba.
With both Algeria and Burkina Faso beginning the tournament with wins, the stage is set for an exhilarating continuation of Group E action.
