The Madinah Region Development Authority is taking major steps to protect the rich birdlife in the region and promote ecotourism. With its natural landscapes, farms, valleys, and coastal areas, Madinah is home to dozens of bird species, attracting nature lovers and birdwatchers from across the Kingdom.
Working closely with researchers and experts, the authority aims to raise public awareness about the diversity of birds in Madinah. By educating people, the program hopes to increase interest in birdwatching, wildlife photography, and ecotourism investment. Dedicated birdwatching sites and guides are part of the long-term plan to make Madinah a top destination for nature tourism.
Documenting Madinah’s Bird Diversity
The authority has identified 26 common bird species in the region and published a detailed reference guide. This guide includes the Arabic and English names of each species, their key characteristics, preferred habitats, and feeding habits.
Some of the most notable species include:
Bright Yellow Weaver Bird: Known for weaving intricate nests among tall trees like jujube and palms.
White Cow Heron: Often found near livestock in areas such as Al-Bayda Park and Wadi Al-Aqiq.
Sandgrouse: A rare and elusive bird that breeds in valleys outside Madinah.
Other commonly seen birds are the common myna, rose-ringed parakeet, laughing dove, eastern bee-eater, collared dove, rock pigeon, hoopoe, kingfisher, and black kite. Each species plays an important role in maintaining the region’s ecological balance.
Promoting Ecotourism and Conservation
Madinah’s landscapes, from farms and valleys to coastal areas, provide vital habitats for birds. The authority’s programs not only aim to protect wildlife but also encourage sustainable tourism. Ecotourism activities such as guided birdwatching tours, photography trips, and educational workshops are expected to grow in the coming years.
By connecting people with nature, the Madinah Region Development Authority hopes to foster a sense of responsibility toward wildlife conservation. Tourists and residents who explore these natural habitats will also gain a better understanding of the importance of biodiversity.
A Step Towards Sustainability
The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable tourism. By safeguarding bird species and their habitats, the program supports biodiversity while offering economic opportunities through ecotourism.
Experts believe that investing in nature-based tourism will attract local and international visitors, boost the local economy, and create jobs in guiding, hospitality, and wildlife research. The combination of conservation and tourism makes Madinah a model for eco-friendly development in the region.
Madinah’s birdlife is a treasure of the Kingdom, and the ongoing efforts by the Madinah Region Development Authority are vital to protecting this natural wealth. With awareness programs, reference guides, and future ecotourism projects, Madinah is set to become a leading destination for nature enthusiasts while maintaining its ecological balance.
