The owners of the infamous Goa nightclub, involved in a devastating fire, were extradited to India from Thailand on Tuesday. Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, who managed "Birch by Romeo Lane," landed in Delhi after being detained by Thai law enforcement earlier this month.
The brothers had fled to Phuket shortly after a catastrophic fire erupted at their nightclub in Arpora, Goa, on December 6, killing 25 individuals, including 20 employees and five tourists. This fire stands as one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in recent memory, with over 100 partygoers present at the time.
Investigators reported that the fire was ignited due to electronic fireworks used during a performance. The rapid spread of flames was exacerbated by the club’s roofing igniting, and the construction materials—such as bamboo—played a significant role in the disaster. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of chaos as patrons attempted to flee, with some trapped in the kitchen alongside nightclub staff.
Narrow entry and exit routes, compounded by the nightclub's proximity to the Arpora River backwaters, hampered rescue efforts. Emergency responders faced significant delays, which is believed to have contributed to the tragic loss of life.
Having escaped to Thailand, the Luthra brothers were apprehended on December 11 after leaving their hotel in Phuket, subsequently moved to Bangkok, and then deported back to India. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice had been issued for their arrest, leading to international collaboration to monitor their whereabouts.
Upon their arrival in Delhi, authorities took them into custody, and they are expected to appear before a local court. Investigators aim to obtain transit remand to take them to Goa for further questioning. Charges of culpable homicide and negligence have been filed against them, alleging that the nightclub violated necessary safety regulations.
Thus far, five individuals linked to the nightclub have been arrested by Goa Police, including management and personnel. The inquiry remains active, focusing on safety permits, building compliance, and the broader accountability associated with this disaster.
This incident has reignited discussions about safety protocols at nightlife venues across India, particularly as families of the deceased continue to demand justice following the tragic event.
