On Friday, Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, submitted a petition for contempt of court at the Islamabad High Court, claiming that prison officials denied her a meeting with Imran inside Adiala Jail. This action was taken during a gathering in Islamabad that included Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and numerous supporters, amplifying the controversy surrounding Imran Khan’s detention.
In her legal filing, Aleema highlighted that the Islamabad High Court had reinstated Khan's meeting rights with a ruling on March 24, specifying visits should be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday. However, she accused the officials at Adiala Jail of consistently disregarding these directives and preventing her from visiting her brother, who has been incarcerated since August 2023.
The plea requested that the court initiate contempt proceedings against Abdul Ghafoor Anjum, the jail superintendent, as well as other key officials, including Federal Interior Secretary Captain (retd) Muhammad Khurram Agha and Punjab Home Department Secretary Noorul Amin. Aleema contended that her brother's legal entitlements and the necessity for respectful treatment were compromised due to the authorities' failure to comply with judicial instructions.
Aleema Khan, along with Chief Minister Afridi, engaged in a prolonged sit-in protest that spanned nearly sixteen hours after being barred from entering the jail. Their frustration grew as they were still unable to see Imran Khan, intensifying the outcry among his backers.
Later, Afridi stated that he was told by the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court that a meeting could not be arranged. During conversations with the media, he cautioned that continued impositions on meetings could lead to disruptions in legislative activities as a protest measure. Lawmakers were also heard vocalizing their concerns within the Senate regarding the former prime minister’s continuing detention.
Afridi announced plans for more gatherings outside the Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail next Tuesday in a bid to reclaim visitation rights. Expressing his exasperation, he questioned the remaining legal avenues available to secure a meeting with Imran Khan after exhausting all options.
As rumors about Imran Khan's well-being circulated, authorities have dismissed any claims of declining health. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry reassured parliament that the former prime minister is in stable condition and is receiving preferential treatment such as meals from a personal chef—an advantage not granted to other inmates.
Sohail Afridi, who assumed the role of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister just last month, emphasized that his primary goal is to facilitate jail meetings with Imran Khan. Yet, despite numerous attempts, he has faced obstacles in securing such access. His last endeavor culminated in a peaceful sit-in outside the prison wall, where he committed to persist until the legal rights of Imran Khan are honored.
Afridi reiterated that their campaign will uphold until officials adhere to the court's ruling, asserting that their protests are based in constitutional rights, and they will not relent in their pursuit.
