Experiencing leg swelling is something many encounter, particularly after extended periods of standing or sitting. In most instances, it is not dangerous and typically resolves on its own. However, there are situations where swelling may indicate a severe health issue. Dr. Jeremy London, a seasoned heart surgeon with over 25 years in practice, recently provided insights on distinguishing between harmless swelling and symptoms warranting concern.
Dr. London described swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet as edema—a condition that arises when excess fluid escapes blood vessels and accumulates in surrounding tissues. This manifests as puffy legs that can feel heavy and may hinder mobility. While some triggers are benign, others require medical intervention.
He noted that improper vein function can result in blood pooling in the lower legs, a condition referred to as chronic venous insufficiency, which may cause persistent swelling and discomfort.
Furthermore, swelling may indicate underlying complications with the heart, kidneys, or liver. When these organs struggle to regulate fluid, it can lead to fluid retention, particularly in the lower body. Such swelling is a red flag and should not be overlooked.
Certain medications—including those for blood pressure, pain management, or hormonal treatments—can also cause swelling. Dr. London emphasized the necessity of informing your healthcare provider if swelling begins post-medication.
Another contributing factor may involve the lymphatic system, the body’s waste disposal network. Blockages or overloads in this system can result in lymphedema, often requiring ongoing treatment.
Dr. London suggested several measures to alleviate swelling. Regular movement is beneficial, as walking can help leg muscles facilitate blood return to the heart. Elevating the legs above heart level can also mitigate swelling, as can compression stockings, which aid in pushing excess fluid from tissues.
However, he cautioned that sudden onset swelling, swelling in just one leg, or swelling accompanied by pain, chest discomfort, or breathing difficulties could signify a blood clot—an urgent medical condition that demands immediate attention. He recommends seeking prompt medical assistance if these alarming symptoms are present.
While most instances of swelling are benign, Dr. London stresses the importance of tuning in to your body's signals. Early intervention can prevent severe issues. Simple measures such as increasing mobility, elevating your legs, and being aware of unusual symptoms can help maintain health and safety.
This information serves to enhance understanding of symptoms, but it should not replace professional medical advice. Individuals with concerns should consult a healthcare provider.
