US Father and Son Fatally Stung by Asian Giant Hornets During Laos Zip-line

Post by : Raina Nasser

An American father and his teenage son lost their lives after receiving more than 100 stings from Asian giant hornets while on a zip-line tour near Luang Prabang on October 15, The Times reported. The victims have been named as 47-year-old Daniel Owen and his 15-year-old son, Cooper.

Owen, originally from Idaho, worked as the headmaster of a private school in Vietnam and was on a short family holiday with his wife, Jessica, and their son when the incident occurred.

Local accounts indicate the pair were descending from a tree platform with a guide when they inadvertently agitated a hornet nest. Asian giant hornets are the largest hornet species and their venom can cause intense pain, severe allergic reactions and, in rare instances, death.

Dr. Phanomsay Phakan of the Phakan Arocavet Clinic, who treated the victims, reported that both had extensive red welts consistent with more than 100 stings. He described the injuries as extremely painful and said he had not encountered a case of comparable severity in two decades of practice.

Although the father and son were initially conscious and showed no immediate signs of anaphylaxis upon arrival at hospital, their conditions deteriorated rapidly and they died within hours despite medical intervention.

The eco-adventure operator, Green Jungle Park, issued condolences and characterised the event as an unpredictable natural incident.
A park spokesperson said they have reviewed safety measures following what they called an extraordinary and previously unseen occurrence at the site.

The deaths have renewed attention on safety protocols for adventure tourism in Southeast Asia, prompting calls from experts for stricter precautions by zip-line operators and eco-parks, particularly during periods when hornet activity is elevated.
