During his first official visit to China, Spain’s King Felipe VI met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday, resulting in the signing of various agreements designed to enhance language exchanges, trade, and overall collaboration between the two countries. This visit underscores Spain’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Beijing.
The Spanish royal delegation, which included Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, received a grand welcome featuring a military band and a 21-gun salute at the Great Hall of the People, highlighting the significance of this state visit.
In their discussions, Xi emphasized China’s willingness to partner with Spain in creating a “comprehensive strategic partnership” in light of the complex global environment. The agreements span various areas, including economic collaboration, language initiatives, and the export of Spanish aquatic products to China, with both parties focusing on enhancing trade relations in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and green technology.
King Felipe’s itinerary began in Chengdu, where he participated in a Spain-China business forum with Spanish business leaders alongside the country’s foreign and economy ministers. With a population of 49.4 million, Spain has increasingly become one of the EU countries most inclined towards collaboration with China. Currently, China’s exports to Spain surpass those from Spain to China, indicating potential for more balanced trade.
This visit builds upon previous high-level diplomatic exchanges, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s third trip to China in April. In recent years, Spanish and Chinese companies have formed various partnerships, including a joint venture between CATL and Stellantis for a battery facility in northern Spain, as well as initiatives in green hydrogen technology. Spain’s ongoing shift to renewable energy, which accounted for over half of its electricity production last year, relies significantly on access to Chinese raw materials and innovative solar technologies.
King Felipe is also scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, the chairman of China’s top legislative body, as Spain strives to fortify its economic, cultural, and technological ties with the world’s second-largest economy.
