On Monday at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, King Charles will formally reveal the UK’s first military memorial dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service personnel. The event marks the monarch’s first official engagement centred on the LGBT community and honours those who served while the armed forces prohibited open LGBT service.
Commissioned and funded by the government, the bronze work, named “Open Letter,” is crafted to suggest a crumpled, freestanding correspondence. The piece carries engraved extracts drawn from historical letters and testimonies once wielded against LGBT service members, a symbolic reminder of the penalties many faced simply for their identities.
As commander-in-chief, the King is expected to lay flowers at the memorial, a gesture intended to signal institutional recognition and compassion for LGBT personnel and veterans who were penalised under the earlier ban.
Brigadier Claire Phillips, who entered the Army in 1995 when openness about sexual orientation remained prohibited, described the memorial as a powerful symbol for those harmed by the policy. She said it helps give voice to veterans whose experiences were suppressed and contributes to a process of formal acknowledgement.
Sergeant Alastair Smith, who joined the service in 1998, noted that military culture has evolved but cautioned that prejudice still persists in parts of society. He emphasised the resilience of LGBT individuals who opted to serve despite the risks and social barriers they faced.
The unveiling follows an independent government-commissioned inquiry which documented decades of systemic mistreatment, including dismissals, harassment and sexual assaults targeted at LGBT personnel. In response, authorities have proposed compensation of up to £70,000 for victims affected by the historic ban.
Beyond its physical presence, the Open Letter memorial is intended as an institutional admission of past wrongs and a public step toward reconciliation. For many veterans, the dedication represents overdue recognition of service and sacrifice and a broader shift in how the nation confronts its history on equality and inclusion.
