In a surprising turn of events this week, Kim Kardashian sparked a fresh round of controversy by questioning the authenticity of the historic 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing during an episode of Hulu’s popular series, The Kardashians. Her comments reignited an old conspiracy theory claiming the moon landing was staged—prompting NASA’s acting administrator to respond swiftly and firmly.
During the episode, Kardashian cited a video clip of astronaut Buzz Aldrin, interpreting his remarks as evidence that the moon landing “didn’t happen.” She read aloud from her phone Aldrin’s alleged statement: “There was no scary moment, because it didn't happen,” leading her to conclude, “So I think it didn’t happen.”
This claim, however, was quickly challenged by Sean Duffy, the US Transportation Secretary and acting head of NASA. Taking to the social media platform X, Duffy firmly stated, “Yes, @KimKardashian, we’ve been to the Moon before ... 6 times!” He also emphasized that the United States is planning a new wave of lunar missions under the Artemis program, with Artemis II set for 2026, which will send astronauts on a 10-day orbit around the Moon ahead of a planned landing in 2027. “We won the last space race and we will win this one too,” Duffy added.
The controversy stemmed from a misinterpretation of Aldrin’s 2015 remarks at Britain’s Oxford Union. When asked about the scariest moment of the Apollo 11 mission, Aldrin appeared to dismiss the idea that there was a frightening moment, saying, “It didn’t happen,” meaning no scary event occurred—not denying the landing itself. He went on to describe a technical issue with a circuit breaker, underscoring the mission's real challenges rather than denying its authenticity.
Despite the swift NASA response, Kardashian’s remarks underscore the enduring nature of moon landing conspiracy theories that have circulated since the 1970s. Tens of millions witnessed the live broadcast of Apollo 11’s lunar landing, yet skepticism has periodically resurfaced, fueled by misinterpretations and misinformation.
A NASA spokesperson was unavailable for additional comment, and representatives for Kardashian and Aldrin did not immediately respond.
As public figures like Kardashian continue to influence millions, NASA’s effort to reaffirm humanity’s monumental achievement on the Moon remains crucial—especially with new missions aiming to expand our presence beyond Earth in the coming years.
