Madison Keys kicked off her Australian Open title defense with a commendable victory over Ukrainian newcomer Oleksandra Oliynykova, winning 7-6(6), 6-1 on Tuesday at Rod Laver Arena.
The match began on a challenging note for Keys, who faced early setbacks with two lost games due to unforced errors and double faults. Staying composed, she managed to equalize the first set at 4-4, navigating through a tense tiebreak, where Oliynykova's deep shots tested her rhythm.
With two set points against her, Keys unleashed her signature powerful shots to fend them off. The ninth-seeded American celebrated her hard-fought first set win with a triumphant roar, visibly energized.
In the second set, Keys swiftly took charge by breaking Oliynykova’s serve and gaining a 3-0 lead. She retained her momentum throughout, delivering robust serves and groundstrokes to seal the match at 6-1 in this set.
With this victory, Keys progresses to the second round, where she will encounter fellow American Ashlyn Krueger. The 30-year-old's win underscores her focus and ability to transform challenging scenarios into success.
Keys’ performance reaffirms her readiness to defend her title at the Australian Open, marking her as a formidable player in Melbourne.
