Kenyans Detained in South Africa for Unauthorized Employment at US Refugee Center

Post by : Mina Rahman

Authorities in South Africa have apprehended seven nationals from Kenya for engaging in illegal work at a facility that processes refugee applications from Afrikaners seeking asylum in the United States.

These individuals had entered South Africa on tourist visas and went ahead with employment despite having previous visa denials, thus breaching immigration regulations. The South African government intends to deport them and impose a five-year entry ban.

This operation underscores South Africa's dedication to combating illegal immigration and visa infractions. Initial diplomatic discussions with the United States and Kenya regarding the episode are currently underway.

The refugee application process is overseen by two entities: RSC Africa, a Kenyan organization, and Amerikaners, a South African group that offers assistance to Afrikaners wishing to relocate to the US.

Despite a significant reduction in the number of refugees the US accepts—from 125,000 to 7,500—the applications from the white Afrikaner demographic are prioritized, with claims of persecution, which South Africa has vigorously disputed.

These arrests occur amidst existing tensions between South Africa and the Trump administration related to resettlement policies and ongoing discussions about land reform.
